Against All Odds

When the darkness threatens

To swallow me whole

The world proves itself to me

Against all odds

Crisp air fills my lungs

As I stroll the riverfront

I am often blind to its splendor

Having spent my life

Ebbing and flowing

Alongside it

When the sunlight refracts

On its gentle waves

And I hear the water kiss the shore

Lapping against its pebbled beaches

I am reminded that I am here

Against all odds

Across the shore

The train cuts through the lush hills

Its whistle echoing in the valley like a ghost

A constant in a world of uncertainty

A reminder of a way out

The aroma of coffee fills my nose

And leads me from the riverbanks to the cafe

Like a cartoon character is led to a windowsill adorned with a fresh pie

The warm brew a comfort to hold

Liquid sunshine illuminating me from the inside out

That funny feeling

Against all odds

It’s the little things

That pull me out

How the ordinary can be this

Extraordinary

Proof that this world is

A beautiful statistical anomaly

And that life can be good

Against all odds
