August
The final grains in the hourglass of summer
Be sure to not let any slip through your fingers
The responsibilities that never left peak ‘round the corner,
Ready to pounce back with full force
Eternal sunshine’s about to fall out of view,
And we’re left on the stoop of early fall
Wondering if the light will ever return from its cigarette run
The death march increases in volume,
Proving that there’s nothing worse than knowing how it ends
We always come back to summer like a jilted lover
Never learning from last year’s heartbreak.
Summer is too charming, too alluring, too addicting
To not want to do it all over again
We ignore that summer is a ruse
Our obligations are the same
And there are more than just three months to seize opportunity
Summer is a narcissist saying
There’s no one like it
And that you won’t ever survive without it
Or be happy away from it.
Maybe try to enjoy the light from the moon for once
She’s gentle, and gives you grace to find yourself under the cover of night
The light of the summer sun blinds you from what is true
It Convinces you to neglect you real life
Your real priorities that collect cobwebs just in time for Halloween
So, yes, August, our time is running out
Though we’re turning the page to the next chapter,
We are not closing the book entirely.
Because would summer even taste as sweet
Or would the sun even warm our skin the same
If not for the fall, the winter, the spring?
If not for the things that contrast it so wildly,
Would summer even matter much anyway?
