Neighborhood Narcissus
I was the water on which
You projected your image
The one you obsessed over
And never let a ripple run through
Water is bound for tempest
Though that disturbs your view
You lost control of yourself
Now you can’t afford to lose control of me
But I am not your image
I am not your echo
I call from the forest
And you just see the trees
Your vanity is insecurity
Your integrity is corruption
You are not who you project onto glossy waters
That can see right through you
And so you are wasting away
Holding on tightly to what you’ve done right
So you do not have to turn around and face
What you’ve done wrong
Go ahead
Cut off your limbs
And blame them for being weak
You didn’t need them anyway
Go ahead
Lay down and die
Because God only knows
You have dug your own grave anyhow
